IG Douglas Kanja: Albert Ojwang was arrested for tarnishing DIG Eliud Lagat’s name

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has revealed that the late Albert Ojwang, a social media influencer and teacher, was arrested following a defamation complaint filed by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Eliud Kipkoech Lagat.

The statement, made during a press briefing at Nairobi’s Central Police Station on Monday, has fuelled public outrage and intensified calls for justice after Ojwang’s mysterious death in custody.

Kanja disclosed that Ojwang, alongside others, was apprehended by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives on Saturday, June 7, after Lagat lodged a formal complaint alleging that his reputation had been tarnished by Ojwang’s social media posts.

“The reason the late Albert Ojwang was arrested, together with a few others, is because there was a complaint launched by the DIG KPS about his name being tarnished,” Kanja stated, emphasising that Lagat, like any citizen, had a right to legal protection.

Ojwang, a 31-year-old Kiswahili and Religious Studies teacher based in Voi, was arrested at his family home in Kakot, Homa Bay County, and transported approximately 400 kilometres to Nairobi’s Central Police Station.

According to police reports, he was booked under OB number 136/7/6 of 2025 at 21:35 hrs on Saturday for “false publication” under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act (2018).
