Senator Karen Nyamu offers an apology after saying slain teacher Albert Ojwang abducted and killed himself in the police cells. The controversial senator claimed that they have previously seen people abducting themselves or using the opposition to set an agenda.
“We have seen shameless self-abductions to set the people against their government, and it is not lost on us what this desperate, bitter opposition is capable of just to make the government look bad,” she wrote in part.
Many Kenyans were incensed by Nyamu’s statement, and she ultimately yielded to the pressure. Nyamu observed in a post on Tuesday, June 10, that she seldom retracts or apologises for her statements.
The controversial politician set the record straight on her earlier statement.
“I don’t apologise or retract often, not out of pride, but because I believe I have room to make mistakes and to be wrong sometimes.
“But let’s be clear, I never said the gentleman abducted himself. Check my words. What I did say was that the opposition has staged scenes before, and that it’s not far-fetched to imagine they could use compromised police to create another scene to achieve what is your guess and mine.
“But that was before IG Kanja’s statement and before I saw Omondi’s own social media post.
“Now, with the facts clearer, Mr. President, heads must roll. You must show the nation that no life can be taken by rogue officers without consequences. We need a full investigation and criminal charges with the swiftness we saw in Hon. Ongondo’s case. We demand the highest compensation available to the family.
“Omondi was young, bright, and full of promise. Kama mzazi, hii inauma hadi kwa maini. Poleni sana kwa familia. May justice speak louder than our pain! ” she said.
