Kibwana: Why Ruto apologise, then arrest Finance Bill 2025 critic Rose Njeri?

Former Makueni Governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana has strongly criticised President William Ruto after the arrest of Rose Njeri, a well-known opponent of the Finance Bill 2025. This happened just a few days after the president publicly apologised to young people in Kenya.

Kibwana made a clear statement on social media on Saturday, May 31, 2025. He questioned how genuine the president’s apology was to the youth, especially after the arrest of Njeri, who was promoting public participation as allowed by the Kenyan Constitution.

“WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO APOLOGISE TO YOUNG PEOPLE TODAY AND THEN ARREST ROSE NJERI THE VERY NEXT DAY FOR ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO SPEAK UP ABOUT THE FINANCE BILL?” Kibwana wrote.

Njeri, a civic activist, created a website called “Objection to the Finance Bill 2025”. This website encouraged citizens to share their opinions and objections directly with the government, as the constitution allows for public participation.

Njeri was arrested by police on Friday, May 30, 2025. Her arrest stirred up a lot of reactions on social media and prompted the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) to take action quickly. Continue Reading
