ODM threaten to ditch Broad-based over continued state murders

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi has issued a stern warning to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA)-led government, threatening to declare a breach of their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) if satisfactory answers are not provided regarding the death of social media influencer Albert Omondi Ojwang in police custody.

Ojwang, a 31-year-old teacher, died on June 8, 2025, at Nairobi’s Central Police Station, sparking widespread outrage.

“We signed an MOU with UDA and agreed that we are not going to have abductions and killings like this one,” Osotsi stated during a press briefing on Tuesday.

“If we do not get proper answers from the UDA government, we will consider this as a breach of the MOU we have with UDA.”

The MOU, signed on March 8, 2025, between ODM and UDA, outlined commitments to address issues such as constitutionalism, citizen rights, and ending state excesses, including abductions and extrajudicial killings.

Osotsi’s remarks follow a postmortem report confirming that Ojwang died from severe head injuries caused by blunt force trauma, with additional non-self-inflicted injuries to his head, neck, limbs, and body, contradicting police claims of suicide.

The ODM leadership’s demand for accountability aligns with growing public and political pressure for a transparent investigation into Ojwang’s death.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is currently investigating, while Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has interdicted several officers linked to the incident.
