President William Ruto has expressed sadness over the death of Albert Ojwang and has called on the National Police Service to quickly investigate the situation.
“The police must take action to handle crime and ensure law and order while also addressing any bad behaviour within their own ranks,” he said.
Ruto urged the National Police Service to work closely with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority to help ensure a fast, clear, and trustworthy investigation into Ojwang’s death.
“As we remember him, let us carefully follow how the investigation goes, without jumping to conclusions or making quick judgements that could affect the process,” he said.
“I believe that in time, we will know the truth about what happened to Ojwang and that justice will be served.”
President Ruto said he was shocked and very upset to hear about Ojwang’s death while in police custody.
“I want to express my deepest sympathies to Meshack Ojwang and his family for the painful loss of their dear son,” he said.
“This tragic event, involving the police, is heartbreaking and not acceptable.”
He condemned any actions or failures by the police that may have led to Ojwang’s death, whether through carelessness or criminal acts.
“It is important for every member of the National Police Service to understand that when they take someone into custody, they must take great care of that person’s safety and well-being. They must do this job seriously and without fail,” he said.
“The National Police Service has the important job of protecting everyone’s safety and property. They need to earn and keep the trust of the people.”
