The government of President Samia Suluhu Hassan in Tanzania has decided to cancel the registration of Bishop Josephat Gwajima’s church, Glory of Christ Church – Ufufuo na Uzima.
This church is led by Bishop Josephat Gwajima, who is both a bishop and a member of Parliament for the Kawe constituency. He recently spoke out against kidnappings and disappearances happening in the country.
The government claims that Gwajima’s sermons are politically motivated and meant to turn people against them. They believe his actions could threaten peace and safety in the nation.
Despite being a strong supporter of President Hassan’s ruling party, CCM, Gwajima said he will keep speaking out about these issues because they harm Tanzania’s reputation abroad.
Mr. Emmanuel Kihampa, who is in charge of civil societies, officially removed the registration of the Glory of Christ Church.
This announcement came just one day after Gwajima said he would continue to condemn the abductions and disappearances.
Mr. Kihampa said the church broke the law by giving sermons that were seen as politically charged and aimed at criticising the government.
He warned that Gwajima’s actions could lead to problems for peace and stability in the country.
“Using the powers given to me today, 2 June 2025, I have revoked the registration of the Glory of Christ Church – Ufufuo na Uzima,” said Mr Kihampa in his statement.
