Technician Arrested for Deleting CCTV Footage at Central Police Station After Albert Ojwang’s Death

A Nairobi-based technician has been arrested for allegedly tampering with the CCTV system at the Central Police Station following the controversial death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang in custody.

The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was apprehended at his residence in Saika, Nairobi, during a targeted operation conducted by police on Friday morning, June 13, 2025.

According to police sources, the technician was allegedly hired to interfere with the station’s digital video recorder (DVR) system hours after Ojwang’s death on June 8, 2025.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) previously revealed that DVR logs showed the CCTV discs were replaced at 07:23:29 and 07:23:48 on the morning of Ojwang’s death, raising suspicions of a deliberate cover-up.

Posts on X claim the technician admitted to being paid Sh3,000 for the task and implicated two police officers, though these allegations remain unverified by official sources.

Ojwang, a 31-year-old teacher and social media influencer, was arrested in Homa Bay on June 7 over a social media post allegedly defaming Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat.

He was transferred to Nairobi’s Central Police Station, where he died under suspicious circumstances. An autopsy revealed he suffered blunt force trauma, neck compression, and multiple injuries, contradicting initial police claims of suicide.

The technician’s arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation, which has seen at least 14 police officers interrogated and several, including the station’s Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Samson Talaam, interdicted.

IPOA is working to recover the tampered footage for forensic analysis, while the Director of Public Prosecutions has ordered the agency to conclude its probe within days.

The case has fueled nationwide protests and demands for justice, with activists accusing the police of systemic brutality. President William Ruto has called for a transparent investigation, amid growing public distrust in the National Police Service.
