Martha Karua, the leader of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), has supported a new idea for protesting against the government: reducing the money it receives.
She believes this can bring about change without putting people’s lives in danger.
In an interview on a local TV station on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, Karua said that Kenyans should find creative and peaceful ways to stand against what she calls a government that takes advantage of its citizens’ suffering.
“There are many ways to make a government listen. One way is to stop giving them money. This has worked in other places. The government relies on the hard work of the citizens,” Karua explained.
She mentioned a recent event as an example of people working together. On July 7, 2025, there were big protests across the country, which brought many activities to a halt.
On that day, many roads were blocked, there were no public buses, and many businesses closed down. In several areas, heavily armed police were present, making it hard for people to go about their daily lives.
Many shop owners chose to keep their doors shut, either to support the protests or because they were afraid.
Shops that tried to open often had to close early because of the growing tensions and fear of looting. Banks also closed in busy areas, schools and colleges were shut down, and some hospitals reduced their services.
The strong response from the police led to several deaths, with reports of them using live bullets against protesters.
As worries about safety continue, people are now looking at economic ways to resist the government.
