Gachagua Alleges Police-Goons Plot at Sun City Hotel to Disrupt Saba Saba Protests

The former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, made explosive claims, alleging that police are meeting with goons at Sun City Hotel in Nyeri to plan disruptions for the upcoming Saba Saba protests on July 7.

Speaking to supporters, Gachagua stated, “Nimepata ripoti polisi wanakutana na goons saa hizi pale Sun City Hotel, Nyeri kupanga vile watahangaisha ma Gen Zs siku ya Saba. Vijana mkimbie hapo mtoe hao watu mbio!”

Gachagua’s remarks come amid heightened tensions following the June 25 protests, which left 20 dead, including Timothy Bwibo in Eldoret.

Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), also criticised President William Ruto, referencing the 2007 Kiambaa church fire that killed 35 people, including children, during post-election violence.

He stated, “William Ruto, we don’t have a problem if you like building churches, but since 2007, why don’t you get that 1.2 billion and go rebuild the Kiambaa church that was torched with our children inside!”

. This remark, aimed at Ruto’s recent allocation of KSh 1.2 billion for a State House church, has reignited debates about government priorities.

The opposition, including Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Fred Matiang’i, is intensifying its campaign in Western Kenya to challenge Ruto ahead of the 2027 elections.

The alleged Nyeri meeting follows reports of “state-sponsored goons” attacking opposition convoys in Bungoma, with lawyer Ndegwa Njiru calling the violence a fight for “national liberation” .

Gachagua previously accused Ruto and Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen of orchestrating goons to infiltrate peaceful Gen Z protests on June 25, 2024, to discredit them.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reported 19 deaths and over 400 injuries during those protests, fuelling calls for accountability.

As Saba Saba approaches, Gachagua’s claims have heightened fears of violence, with activists urging vigilance.
