U-Turn, Simba Arati praises Rigathi Gachagua on ‘Wantam’ stance.

On July 2, 2025, Kisii Governor Simba Arati caused a lot of talk online and in politics after he changed his opinion about former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. He praised Gachagua for being brave and opposing President William Ruto, just one day after he had criticised him.
Arati made these comments during a speech in Kisii, which has led to guessing about changing political alliances in Kenya as the 2027 elections get closer. His words show the complicated nature of politics and influence in the country.
Just the day before, on July 1, Arati had rejected Gachaguaās āwantamā (one-term) slogan. He warned Gachagua not to bring divisive politics to Kisii and to show respect for Fred Matiangāi, who is seen as the Gusii community’s favourite candidate for the 2027 presidential elections.
However, in a surprising turn, Arati praised Gachagua for standing up to Ruto. He said he had been misquoted earlier and welcomed Gachagua to Kisii any time.
āGachagua is welcome to Kisii, and I see his important role in keeping Ruto accountable,ā Arati said. He also called for unity among opposition leaders, including Raila Odinga, to support Matiangāiās candidacy.
This change of heart received mixed responses on social media. Some people agreed that Aratiās words showed Gachagua’s importance in the upcoming elections, while others criticised the governor for not supporting Matiangāi by working with Gachagua.
The situation is tense, especially since Gachaguaās Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) is becoming popular in Mount Kenya and other areas. Gachagua’s āwantamā campaign against Rutoās re-election is gaining momentum.
Aratiās change of opinion is seen as a smart move to join forces with Gachagua while still supporting Matiangāi. Recent events, like the abduction of DCP youth leader Wanjiku Thiga and claims of violence during protests on June 25, have raised concerns about Kenyaās political environment.
Arati has called for peace in Kisii, urging people to listen to all candidates without causing trouble. This reflects the challenges the opposition faces with their internal divisions.
Aratiās change in stance towards Gachagua shows the strategic planning going on before the 2027 elections, with the Gusii and Mount Kenya regions becoming important areas in this political battle.
