A woman’s shrill cries stopped traffic in Nairobi’s Central Business District on a bright Wednesday afternoon. Outside a well-known pharmacy on Moi Avenue, where a woman had fallen, people hurried to the scene, yelling in pain and bewilderment. “Uuuui! Uuuui! She cried, holding her lower body, “Naumia jamani.” Her sobs were sad in addition to being painful.
She had trouble walking. As interested bystanders murmured and questioned what was going on, a few Good Samaritans assisted in carrying her into the drugstore, where she got first assistance. Grace Wanjiku, a 27-year-old waitress from Lari in Kiambu, was that woman. She eventually opened up after calming down and feeling some comfort, which took several hours.
