Larry Madowo addresses the absence of coverage in the Tanzanian election. Larry Madowo has addressed the reasons behind his decision not to cover Tanzania’s recent election, highlighting government restrictions and the threats to press freedom.
Tanzania is not fond of independent critical reporting. As a foreigner, I require media accreditation to operate in the country. Essentially, it requires permission from the government.
He stated that the circumstances have not gotten better under President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
“It was once an issue, even during President Magufuli’s time. Conditions have not improved under President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Madowo also dismissed the idea of entering as a tourist, despite numerous suggestions from his audience to obtain a tourist visa for Tanzania.
“As a Kenyan, I don’t require a visa.” “Yes, however, I am not permitted to report in that status. I would be breaking the law.
He cautioned that there would be significant repercussions if he chose to disregard the laws of Tanzania.
“I might face arrest, deportation, or something even more severe.”
“We know how Tanzania treats those who are not favoured. Tanzanian journalists face significant challenges in their operations. They face harassment, intimidation, physical assault, and arrest. At times, they simply vanish.”
