Moses Kuria for Nairobi Governor with George Aladwa. Former Public Services Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria formally launched his Nairobi gubernatorial campaign on Sunday at a packed rally in Dandora Phase 4, announcing Makadara MP George Aladwa as his preferred deputy governor candidate for the 2027 elections. The surprise pairing has sent shockwaves through city politics barely hours after the declaration.
Flanked by hundreds of youth waving yellow flags, Moses Kuria told the cheering crowd that Nairobi needs fresh leadership that understands both business and grassroots struggles.
“I am not coming to warm the seat. I am coming to transform Nairobi into a true 24-hour economy that works for boda boda riders, market women, and tech entrepreneurs alike,” the former Gatundu South MP declared.
The choice of George Aladwa as running mate has raised eyebrows across political circles. The vocal ODM legislator has been a fierce critic of the Kenya Kwanza administration yet accepted the Moses Kuria deputy governor slot without hesitation.
Aladwa told journalists that ideology takes second place when it comes to serving Nairobi residents. “Development has no party colour. Moses Kuria has the energy and connections to fix our roads, water problems, and garbage collection,” he said.
Political analysts were quick to question the real motive behind the Moses Kuria Nairobi governor bid. Several Azimio-leaning strategists claim the move is designed to split the Mt Kenya vote in the capital, similar to what happened in the recent Mbeere North by-election, where a CCK candidate linked to Kuria reportedly diluted votes that would have gone to the opposition.
A senior ODM official who requested anonymity told this reporter that the Kuria-Aladwa ticket appears engineered from State House to weaken Nairobi’s traditional opposition stronghold.
“Look at the pattern. In every by-election where Mt Kenya votes matter, suddenly a Kuria-backed candidate appears to confuse voters. Now he wants to do the same in Nairobi on a larger scale,” the source claimed.
Supporters at the Dandora event dismissed the accusations as propaganda from scared opponents. Youth leader Maina Waiganjo said Nairobi residents care more about solutions than tribal arithmetic.
“Governor Sakaja has failed us on traffic, flooding, and street lighting. Moses Kuria has delivered roads and water projects in Gatundu South. Let him come and do the same here,” he argued.
The Moses Kuria campaign team has already opened offices in Eastlands and plans to unveil a manifesto focusing on free vocational training, affordable housing for youth, and digitising revenue collection to reduce corruption.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna reacted cautiously, saying the city belongs to all Kenyans and every candidate will be judged on merit. Current Governor Johnson Sakaja has not commented directly.
Business leaders in the CBD have given mixed reactions to the Moses Kuria Nairobi governor bid. While some appreciate his pro-business stance during his time as Trade Cabinet Secretary, others worry his confrontational style could scare away investors who prefer stability.
As the 2027 race begins to take shape eighteen months early, the entry of Moses Kuria with George Aladwa as running mate has undoubtedly changed the dynamics of Nairobi politics.
Political pundits now predict a three-way contest between the incumbent Sakaja, a possible Azimio unified candidate, and the Kuria-Aladwa ticket that promises to bridge the traditional Mt Kenya-Luo voting divide in the capital.
