Replies exploded in every direction. Ugandans flooded the thread defending Idi Amin at number nine, posting old clips of him dancing and claiming he was “misunderstood by the West but loved at home.” Spaniards were baffled by Franco’s low ranking of sixteen, with one user joking, “Bro did zero research; Franco is easily top three in Spain.”
Germans pointed out their country somehow managed three separate entries (Hitler, Queen Mary’s husband, who was German royalty, and a random mention of Kaiser Wilhelm in quotes) and asked if the list was “personal beef or actual history”.
Dark humour quickly took over. One viral quote read, “Stalin killed 20 million and is number one; Dahmer killed 17 and is number four. Nigerians dropped their own list led by Queen Elizabeth II and Lord Lugard. South Africans put Jan van Riebeeck at the top. Kenyans created a “Most Hated Kenyan Edition” starring colonial chief Sir Charles Eliot and certain living politicians who shall remain nameless to avoid subpoenas.
Historians may never agree on a definitive ranking, but one thing is certain: on a slow Tuesday in East Africa, they found their entertainment in arguing whether an 18th-century pirate deserves to sit above or below a 20th-century dictator who starved millions. The comment section remains an absolute war zone.
