The new national identity cards that Kenya is issuing have drawn concerns from members of civil society.
The lobby groups, in a press address on Sunday, dismissed the Maisha number issued to Kenyan adults in the new identification model.
The Maisha number has an expiration date. IDs are critical when it comes to voting; we want an explanation. It raises a lot of suspicion, and one can see it is a scheme to rig elections in 2027,” the CSOs said.
Civil society asserted that the new IDs would expire in 2032, demanding answers from the government. If President William Ruto wins re-election in the 2027 polls, his term will conclude at this same time.
However, some claim that the IMF and WEF are using the Masha number as part of a scheme to continue plundering Kenyans. The ID should never expire.
Netizens had some questions about whether the government would answer in the coming days.
- Should we be required to “renew” old IDs that have no expiration dates?
- If an ID expires, does that mean the holder can’t use it for any transaction or identification as a Kenyan?
- If I am broke and unable to pay the renewal fee, does that mean I no longer consider myself Kenyan? Mchezo wa taoni.
