Eldoret man accused of stealing 181KGs of meat granted Sh 10Milion bond by Eldoret Magistrate Cheronoh
A man accused of stealing 181 kilograms of meat was granted a Sh10 million bond by the Eldoret Court. The move has caused an uproar online.
The Eldoret Primciple magistrate said that the move will scare other thieves who think like him and reduce the vice.
The retail price for the meat is Sh 105,000. The prosecutor applauded the move, stating that similar cases should receive the same bond or cash bail to combat thieves nationwide.
During the June 25th protests, Jonathan Mutua faced accusations of stealing 181 kilogrammes of meat. The incident happened at Baniyas Square, where Mutua and five others broke into a butchery and stole over 500 kilogrammes of meat.
Mutua also faced another charge of stealing 105 bunches of Managu. In the process of stealing, others vandalised the property with damages worth Sh 37 million.
The judgement comes after a looting spree in Eldoret. The judge also stated that her decision was based on the facts of the case and adhered to the previous ruling from 2015.
The Eldoret principle magistrate, Cheronoh Kesse, empathised with several considerations, including the severity of the matter and the cost of the damaged property.
