How Nairobi Kanjo earning Sh21,000 a month, amassed Sh537 million in assets

decision to freeze Michael Auka Ajwang's multi-million-shilling assets was taken by Justice Esther Maina

The Anti-Corruption Court has frozen the property of a City Hall employee with over Sh537 million in unaccounted wealth.

The decision to freeze Michael Auka Ajwang’s multi-million-shilling assets was taken by Justice Esther Maina. Michael Auka Ajwang is a junior procurement officer at City Hall who receives a monthly salary of Sh21,000.

The judge granted the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission’s request for the freezing of the assets owned by Ajwang and his company, Hydeout Riviera Limited, including 11 vehicles, nine parcels of land, and a three-star hotel in Kisumu County because they were obtained through unlawful means.

The EACC informed Justice Maina that Anjwag was allegedly engaged in major malpractice at the municipal hall to get the directives.

The court approved the orders blocking the official’s assets until the commission’s case was heard and decided.

A temporary restraining order is thus issued preventing Anjwag, his agents, or employees from moving or selling the aforementioned assets in any way until the hearing and decision of this case between the parties, Justice Maina said.

She also prevented the county official from getting his hands on the Sh799,000 that EACC agents seized during their search of his home in 2022.

According to initial investigations, Ajwang, 45, got Sh40.8 million in bribes from many businesses that had obtained contracts from the Nairobi County government, anti-corruption detectives told the court.

The first defendant in the EACC lawsuit is identified as Ajwang, while the second respondent is identified as Riviera Limited. Ajwang’s wife is said to be the owner of the business.

The commission claims that some of his possessions have been linked to his wife’s businesses.

“He (Ajwang) receives a net monthly pay of Sh21,000 on average. He received a net salary of Sh2,122,232.56 from January 2014 to June 2022, the period under examination. Anjwag got money from firms that secured Nairobi City County contracts, according to preliminary findings,” the commission said.

Anjwag owns 11 cars that were obtained through corruption, in addition to nine property sites in Siaya, Kisumu, and Nairobi counties. The upscale hotel is situated in Kisumu County.
