Top Askaris Suspended by Sakaja Due to Abuse of City Residents
In response to allegations of abuse against city residents, Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja dismissed three senior security personnel on Wednesday.
Patrick Analo, the interim county secretary, delivered the message.
“The Nairobian people must be treated humanely, with the utmost care and dignity, in the pursuit of order in Nairobi City County.”
“The following officers will be suspended as a result of a sequence of events and investigations into recent incidents involving traders, drivers, and business owners in various parts of the city,” he said.
Following the modifications, Tony Kimani, the Chief Officer for Security and Compliance, was suspended immediately, and Eva Wairiuko was named the Chief Officer in Acting Capacity.
William Kangogo will fill in as Director of the City Inspectorate in lieu of Benjamin Omondi, who was suspended from his job.
Carol Njuguna, the assistant director of operations, was also placed on leave.
Other sources said that because of worries that corruption is getting out of hand, there are more incidents of it in the county.
Concerning the way county askaris treat various persons, there have been demonstrations.
This necessitated training and a modification of their methodology. Many were incensed when they were discovered assaulting and intimidating drivers, business owners, and pedestrians.
Station heads have been cautioned by the county service board not to send employees to places they are not permitted to work in.
“The board has observed with concern a pattern of Sector heads designating responsibilities to officers outside of their designated substantive positions, such as personal secretaries, drivers, accountants, and clerical officers, without following the proper procedures for transfer and re-designation.”
The board chairman Thomas Kasoa said in a letter dated November 7 that “Any officer performing duties outside their designated position should revert to their substantive position immediately.”
According to him, officials should be urged to apply for re-designation via the established channels if the services they provide are deemed vital.
He forewarned that in the event that officials carry out tasks beyond the scope of their official employment, the board would not be held accountable.
