Tanzania Electric SGR stops for 8 hours after squirrel and owl interrupt power lines

The Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) has said that a squirrel or an owl may have caused the electrical fault that occurred between Kilosa and Kidete Stations by touching the electrical cables spread over the railway and causing the International Standard Railway (SGR) train that was travelling from Dar es Salaam towards Dodoma to stop for two hours last night, July 30, 2024.

“An error caused a power outage at power station number 7 (Godegode), which is technically known as an “Instantaneous Overcurrent Protection Trip, around 4:20 p.m.,” said the Head of the Relations Unit at TRC, Jamila Mbarouck.

TRC News apologized for the inconvenience and explained that the squirrel and the owl may have caused the incident.

Mbarouck said TRC technicians managed to solve the challenge and restore electricity at 12:30 am, and the train continued its journey towards Dodoma and arrived in Dodoma at 7:57 pm.

The TRC has expressed regret for the trouble the error caused.

On Tuesday night, an electrical fault in the SGR railway occurred between Kilosa and Kidete stations, causing the SGR train travelling from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma to stop for almost eight hours before the technicians fixed the fault and the train continued its journey.

The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has confirmed the incident’s occurrence in its information releases.

The statement partially explained, “Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) is apologizing following a power failure that occurred between Kilosa and Kidete stations and caused an international standard train (SGR) that was travelling from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma to stop for eight hours on July 30, 2024.”
