Michael Musembi Wambua sues NTSA over number plates fees hikes

Former MP aspirant for Mavoko Constituency and human rights advocate Michael Musembi Wambua files a constitutional petition at the High Court of Kenya challenging the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) over an alleged arbitrary increase in fees for reflective number plates on the E-citizen platform.

Wambua argues that NTSA raised the application fee to KSh 3,750 and later reduced it back to KSh 3,050 without providing valid reasons or conducting necessary public participation as mandated by the constitution.

The petition filed under a certificate of urgency alleges that such actions contradict social and economic rights and seeks a court order compelling NTSA to disclose the total amount collected from the unauthorized fee hike.

Wambua has requested that the Auditor General conduct a forensic audit of NTSA’s transactions related to the Ksh 700 fee increment between September 2023 and March 2024.

People expect the court to provide further directions on October 8, 2024.
