Joseph Kimari Machiri, father of 1.5B Equity Bank billion heist suspect, speaks

The father of the prime suspect in Equity Bank’s Sh1.5 billion heist, Joseph Kimari Machiri, claims that lions and hyenas held him captive during a recent abduction that made national headlines.

On August 11, men in tactical gear took Kimari, a former Murang’a MCA, from his home in Kairi village and released him two days later.

He received a warning not to talk about his experience. His son, David Machiri Kimani, who worked at Equity Bank’s Group Processing Centre, is still missing.

The Banking Fraud Unit is currently investigating a case in which Kenya’s second-largest lender, Equity Bank, lost KSh 1.5 billion last month due to an insider and his father, blogger Cyprian Nyakundi, as first reported by The Daily Nation.

47 transactions transferred the stolen funds, intended for employee salaries, to various accounts in other banks without matching credits on Equity’s ledger.

On July 10, the bank’s internal control department noticed these suspicious transactions and transferred the funds into multiple accounts held at other banks.
