Where is Taifa gas? Kenyans paying Sh800 extra for cooking gas over lacking LPG importation competition

EPRA recommends reinstatement of the Open Tender System for LPG imports, as a report shows Kenyans are paying Ksh 881 more per 13-kg cylinder due to lack of competition.

Kenyans are paying more than Sh800 extra for a 13-kg cooking gas due to a lack of competition in LPG importation.

This comes after a report revealed that allowing more companies to bid could lower the price per cylinder from Sh3,200 to Sh2,400.

Just a few months ago, President William Ruto launched the state-of-the-art gas facility in Mombasa. The multi-billion-dollar project was to lower gas refill prices to Sh 500-Sh 1000 per 13 KG cylinder.

The William Ruto administration also finalised the setting up of a 30,000-metric-tonne liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) handling facility by Taifa Gas, owned by tycoon Rostam Aziz.

Nearly two years after President Samia Suluhu’s visit to Kenya in May 2021, Dr. Ruto presided over the ground-breaking event for the LPG plant in Mombasa in February 2023.
