William Ruto, the President of Kenya, has said that he is open to the idea of transforming Kenya’s anti-gang mission into a full-scale United Nations peacekeeping operation.
Despite Kenya’s contribution of approximately 400 police personnel since June, the Multinational Security Support (MSS) operation has faced criticism due to delays in the deployment of critical resources and equipment.
There is a growing likelihood that the mandate that the United Nations Security Council has given to the MSS mission will expire in October.
The United States of America and Ecuador have already begun to make progress since they have proposed a resolution to extend the mandate for an additional year and investigate the possibility of transforming it into an official United Nations peacekeeping mission.
If the Council were to give its approval, Kenya would have “no problem” with this change, according to Ruto.
It is anticipated that on September 30, the United Nations will vote on the extension of the MSS.
