The Kenya Kwanza administration hopes to increase the number of Kenyans employed in Qatar from 67,000 to 300,000.
Alfred Mutua, the cabinet secretary for labour and social protection, claimed this on Sunday when meeting with Dr. Ali Saeed Samikh Al-Marri, the labour minister of Qatar.
Mutua claims that in order to allow more Kenyans to visit the Arab country for employment, Kenya and Qatar are attempting to amend the bilateral agreement they signed in 2012.
In order to minimise delays for job seekers in Qatar, Mutua and his colleague revealed that one of their objectives is to establish a visa centre in Kenya.
“Our aim is to have labourers from all areas, including teachers, nurses, artisans, engineers, etc.,” Mutua stated.
Qatar is in need of qualified workers in the ICT, transportation, and educational sectors, among others.
Ali Saeed expressed his country’s desire to acquire highly skilled labour from Kenya.
“We spoke about ways to make our bond stronger. In order to maintain these linkages and make sure more Kenyans have the chance to work in our nation, we’ll be signing a new agreement,” he declared.
According to President William Ruto, one of his goals is to provide Kenyans with employment options that allow them to travel abroad.
Ruto recently travelled to Germany, where he inked a labour migration pact allowing competent Kenyans to find employment there.
Ruto has also looked for jobs for Kenyans abroad, including in Saudi Arabia.
