It’s not every day that a government spokesperson finds themselves removed from a WhatsApp group, especially one used for top-level state communications.
But for communications chief Isaac Mwaura, that’s exactly what happened.
According to reports, President William Ruto’s administration expelled the former firebrand senator from a significant State House WhatsApp group, possibly signaling his waning influence.
Insiders report that the aforementioned group functions as a primary communication channel for high-level government officials, including cabinet secretaries, senior advisers, and key political figures in Kenya Kwanza, where they discuss major decisions and strategies.
The reason for Mwaura’s expulsion from the government’s messaging coordination group remains unclear, but his expulsion raises concerns about his relationship with the president’s inner circle.
Some sources point to recent tensions between Mwaura and other members of the government communication team as a possible catalyst for the fallout.
One point of contention appears to be his recent handling of the government’s response to criticism from the Catholic bishops.
Some within the administration have characterized his failure to issue a unified statement on behalf of the government as a misstep, opting instead to allow individual ministries to address the issue separately.
It appears that the ever-calculating political machine at State House has likely decided that Mwaura is no longer needed, or at least not the one to be trusted with steering the troubled Kenya Kwanza ship through the turbulent waters ahead.
