Kenya is seeking compensation from India regarding a 500 kg piece of debris from the SpaDex mission that fell in Makuku Village, Makueni County, on Monday, December 30.
Initial investigations conducted by the Kenya Space Agency indicated that the metallic item, approximately 2.5 meters in diameter, was part of a rocket’s separation mechanism.
Typically, such debris is engineered to break apart upon re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere or to land in unpopulated areas, like oceans; however, in this case, the object landed in a residential zone, posing risks to lives and property.
On Wednesday, the Kenya Space Agency (KSA) provided details about the incident involving a metallic object that descended from the sky and landed in Mukuku Village, Mukuku Sublocation, Nduluku Location, Waia Division, Mbooni East Sub-County, Makueni County.
The event occurred on December 30, 2024.
The enigmatic metallic object fell from above and landed roughly two kilometers from Mukuku Police Post, causing alarm among locals who were curious about its nature and origin.
The Agency stated that the object, a metallic ring estimated to be around 2.5 meters in diameter and weighing approximately 500 kilograms, is a fragment of a space object.
