Foreigners Arrested in Mombasa for Issuing Fake PhD Degrees

DCI arrested 4 people, among them 2 foreigners who had rented a space at the White Sands Hotel (Mombasa) and started selling Masters Degrees and PhDs to “excited participants.”.

In a sensational operation in Mombasa, authorities have arrested four individuals, including two foreigners, for operating a fraudulent university scheme.

These suspects were found issuing Master’s and PhD degrees to participants after only three days of training.

The arrests took place near a popular hotel in Mombasa where the fake university was set up. Officers from Bamburi Police Station intervened just in time to halt an ongoing graduation ceremony.

Among those arrested were an American citizen and a Pakistani national, alongside two Kenyan nationals.

The fraudulent certifications included three Master of Business Administration (Leadership and Management) degrees and two PhDs in Leadership (Honoris Causa).

The suspects face charges for conferring degrees without proper accreditation, violating Kenya’s Universities Act.

They have been arraigned at Shanzu Law Courts, where they pleaded not guilty and were released on bond or bail.

This incident cemented the ongoing issues with fraudulent academic credentials in Kenya, where the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have intensified efforts to curb such malpractices.

The case has sparked discussions on the integrity of educational qualifications and the need for stringent verification processes to prevent such occurrences in the future.
