Kenyans are reeling from shock and scepticism following reports that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has allegedly deleted voter data from its database, with many users encountering a “No Voter Found/Search result not found” message on the voter verification portal at https://verify.iebc.or.ke/index.php.
The issue, which surfaced just before the Saba Saba 2025 protests, has sparked widespread outrage and accusations of electoral manipulation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Social media platforms have been flooded with posts from concerned citizens claiming their voter details, previously verified as recently as 2023, are no longer accessible.
One user posted, “I verified my voting details a few months ago, and today nothing is showing up! It says no record found!! Ruto & IEBC have already started cooking the voting register!!”
Another wrote, “IEBC has deleted our data from their database. This is a government from hell!”
The IEBC has not officially confirmed the deletion of voter data, but the timing, coinciding with heightened political tensions and protests against the Finance Bill 2025, has fuelled speculation of foul play.
IEBC earlier denied plans to remove over 2 million ghost voters from Mt Kenya, with Kiambu leading as earlier alleged. The commission said that it currently has no chairperson or commissioners in office.
In a recent statement, the IEBC dismissed claims of removing over two million “ghost voters” as fake, noting that it currently lacks a chairperson or commissioners to authorise such actions.
However, the gazette notice dated June 10, 2025, confirmed President William Ruto’s appointment of Erastus Edung Ethekon as the new IEBC Chairperson, alongside commissioners Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, and Mary Karen Sorobit.
The voter verification portal, designed to allow Kenyans to confirm their registration details using ID or passport numbers, has been a cornerstone of electoral transparency since its introduction.
Past reports from 2022 indicate the IEBC successfully registered 14.3 million voters using biometric technology, with verification available online and via SMS.
The current malfunction, where users report no data being retrieved, raises concerns about the integrity of the voter register.
