Former Rutos’ YK92 boss Cyrus Jirongo dies in road accident

Cyrus Jirongo, who had previously served as M.P. for Lugari, has passed away. On Saturday morning, Jirongo passed away as a result of a car accident that took place in the Karai region of Naivasha, which is located in Nakuru County.

Jirongo was reportedly driving himself to his remote house in Lugari, Kakamega, when his car was engaged in a head-on accident with a bus. According to his friends and family, Jirongo was driving himself to his home.

Based on the information provided by Rift Valley Traffic Enforcement Officer Sarah Chumo, the collision took place on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway at around three o’clock in the morning on December 13, 2025. “During that moment, he was driving alone.”

Prior to embarking on the journey to his residence in Kakamega, he had previously met with a group of Western leaders in Karen, in Nairobi.

It has been reported by some sources that he had been in Naivasha for a conference and was on his way back to Nairobi when the tragedy occurred.

The police have said that they are conducting an investigation into the event. His vehicle was severely damaged, according to the police and witnesses. As a result of the police moving his corpse to the local mortuary, a few of his friends went to the site of the accident and were eventually guided there.

The corpse was going to be sent to Nairobi in order to undergo further treatments. A former Minister for Rural Development, he served in that capacity. Jirongo was mourned by the Governor of Bungoma, Kenneth Lusaka.

“One of our most accomplished sons has been taken from us by death.” May you finally find peace, Honourable Cyrus Jirongo,” he said in a post.

Francis Atwoli, the head of the COTU, grieved at the loss as well.

“This morning, I learnt of the demise of Cyrus Jirongo, who was a valuable member of our community and Kenya. I was filled with a great deal of shock and grief when I learnt of his passing. Far though we adored him, God loved him far more.”

The effect that Jirongo had on national politics and development activities in Western Kenya earned him widespread recognition. He served as the Member of Parliament for Lugari.

At the same time as tributes continue to flow in from colleagues, friends, and constituents recognising Jirongo’s legacy and commitment to public life, the police have begun investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident itself.

The date of Jirongo’s birth is March 21st, 1961. Between the years 1978 and 1981, he was a student at Mang’u High School.

At a young age, he emerged as a prominent figure not because of his formal professional background but rather because of his abilities to organise political events.

As the head of Youth for KANU 92, a prominent political lobby organisation that was created to promote the late President Daniel arap Moi during Kenya’s first multiparty elections, Jirongo came to national notoriety in 1992. This was the year by which he gained national fame.

Jirongo became one of the most powerful young political leaders of the early 1990s as a result of the group’s significant contribution to the mobilisation and fundraising efforts to support the cause.
