Bill Gates predicted a pandemic in 2014, but his warning went mostly unaddressed. Gates told CNBC-TV18 live that another outbreak is likely in the next 20 years and urged world leaders to make preparations.
"People are travelling more, we are invading natural habitats, and another pandemic is likely in the next 20 years.
" We need that preparation so that any country can halt the outbreak before it spreads globally, or at the very least limit the number of deaths, as the finest countries did this time," said Gates, who has written a book on how to prevent the next pandemic.
"People are trying to forget about the pandemic. Even while we have some issues regarding variants, the worst is most likely over.
"We should devote ourselves to reasonable sum in global teams and research and development for new technologies because we will not go another 100 years before we have a pandemic," Gates said.
Gates has suggested the creation of a new body, the Global Epidemic Response Mobilisation (GERM) team, which would be overseen by the World Health Organization (WHO), as it is the only intergovernmental agency capable of providing global credibility. Gates also wants the team to be publicly accountable.
