Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has incurred a staggering cost of Ksh 175 million due to persistent leaks in its roofing, according to a scathing report by the Auditor-General.
The audit revealed serious oversight and execution lapses in the waterproofing and HVAC projects at Terminals 1B and C conducted by a contractor whose competence has been called into question.
Despite the project’s completion in September 2022, leakage problems have continued, particularly during rainy seasons.
Nancy Gathungu’s report also criticises the effectiveness of the initial solution and raises concerns about quality assurance during construction.
There were efforts to reinforce the affected areas, including the sealing of expansion joints, but the fundamental issue of water infiltration remains unresolved.
“There’s a major scandal brewing between the Ambani group and Murkomen. Some time ago, Murkomen announced that the government would unveil a PPP model for building a new terminal at JKIA airport on January 15th.
“However, instead of following through, they resorted to underhanded tactics against other stakeholders, including KAA. Surprisingly, they provided the building documents to the Ambani Group from India.
“Ironically, the Ambani family already had their documents for review even before Murkomen attended the Senate enquiry, thus excluding any public participation. Murkomen essentially shut out other interested parties like Qatar, Singapore etc. Ambani Group is actually one of the least competent airport operators in India, ranking fifth, and they solely operate within India with no international experience,” sources reveal.
However, former CS Kipchumba Murkomen was in the final stages of leasing Kenya’s largest airport for 30 years to a corrupt company from India, for which he received massive kickbacks. Check out some documents received below:
More documents show the agreement between Adani and KAA for a 30-year lease with JKIA. Murkomen used “Consortium Company Holoco Abu Dhabi” in the UAE to receive kickbacks. This deal was done without any public participation. It is alleged that Murkomen received Sh 210 million in Dubai as part of the deal to handover the airport.
