Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza 3rd attempt after impeachment kicks off

The Senate begins proceedings to hear an impeachment case against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza in a third attempt to remove her from office since she assumed the role in 2022.

MCAs, who previously relied on lawyer Muthomi Thiankolu, have appointed constitutional lawyer Ndegwa Njiru as lead counsel.

Lawyers Elisha Ongoya and Elias Mutuma, who have previously represented Governor Mwangaza in impeachment proceedings, lead the defense team.

This marks the third impeachment attempt to remove Governor Mwangaza from office within a span of two years.

According to Speaker Amason Kingi’s Gazette Notice, the trial will last two days.

“On Monday, August 19, 2024, and Tuesday, August 20, 2024, the Senate will hold special sittings in plenary to hear the charges against Hon. Kawira Mwangaza, Governor of Meru County, seeking her removal from office through impeachment.”
