Naivasha Isakhakia community farmers cry over KARLO evictions

Farmers on a KARLO-managed plot near Delamere Farm in Naivasha find themselves in a precarious situation.

Tractors from the National Youth Service (NYS) and a heavy police presence have been digging terraces on the land since Friday, August 30, 2024.

Farmers now have no access.

The land, which is part of a legal dispute between the Isakhakia community and KARLO, saw no prior notice given to the farmers.

The conflict over land ownership, particularly involving KARLO (Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation) and the Isakhakia community, underscores the complexity of land tenure in Kenya.

Such disputes often stem from historical land allocations, government resettlement programs, or unclear land titles.

The court’s dismissal of a related suit by Ndibithi Farmers Company suggests that all legal options have been considered, but the resolution might not satisfy all parties, resulting in continued tension.

The sudden action by NYS and police to dig terraces without prior notice to the farmers was a significant concern.

This not only disrupts farming activities, but also affects the livelihoods of these farmers, who may not have alternative sources of income or immediate relocation options.

They requested a grace period of 3-6 months to harvest crops and remove their belongings, which is a common plea in such scenarios, aiming to mitigate the immediate economic impact.
