After struggling under the e-commerce platform Sky Garden not being able to pay its vendors, Copia also joins the bandwagon by sending home its staff over increased taxes and a difficult business environment.

Several e-commerce platforms have closed their operations or rendered employees redundant.

Retail and e-commerce company Copia Kenya is winding down its operations, with over 1,000 employees set to lose their jobs.

On Wednesday, May 15, 2024, a company meeting issued a one-month formal notice period for potential redundancies in accordance with Section 40(I)(b) of the Employment Act, 2007.

During this time, there will be consultations with affected staff to discuss the changes. The labour officer will also be informed as required by law.

“Our families will be directly affected. I have been with the company for over 3 years, and it has helped a lot of people in Nairobi and major towns,” an employee of the firm said.
