Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura cries after a People Daily newspaper headline depicted the real picture of Nithi Bridge.
According to Mwaura, “People Daily, that headline is the lowest a media house can go.” It’s totally unacceptable and uncalled for, no matter the motivation.”
President William Ruto’s campaign and promises have not resulted in the reconstruction of the bridge.
The headline of the people’s daily read, “How Ruto lies killed Nithi 12.”
Over the course of its history, the Nithi Bridge, which is located in Tharaka Nithi County, has earned a reputation as a “killer bridge!”
The bridge, located along the Embu-Meru road in eastern Kenya, may be Kenya’s most notorious blackspot due to the numerous tragic and catastrophic incidents that have occurred over extended periods of time.
On the last day of August, twelve people lost their lives on the bridge due to a collision between a van they were traveling in and a pickup truck that was transporting Miraa to Nairobi.
According to police reports, the tragedy resulted in the deaths of all of the van passengers, while others who were in other automobiles escaped with serious injuries.
First built in the early 1980s, the Nithi Bridge has a history filled with devastating events. If there are no repairs, the bridge remains a constant reminder of how a flawed road design can jeopardise the lives of road users and their property over time.
As one approaches the bridge itself, it’s easy to understand why it’s become synonymous with road carnage. The descent to the bridge is quick, with steep terrain, sharp turns, and inadequate safety precautions.
As you approach the bridge itself, you’ll understand why it has such a reputation. For those who are easily frightened, this is not a recommended option for a road trip.
