Kenyan volleyballer Janet Wanja dies after battling cancer

Kenyan volleyball legend Janet Wanja has tragically passed away after battling gallbladder cancer. She fell ill in August shortly after returning from the Paris Olympics, where she served as the Malkia Strikers’ fitness trainer.

In a talk with a local radio station, Kevin Kimani, the brother of Kenyan volleyball legend Janet Wanja, verified that she had passed away, saying, “The family of Janet Wanja would like to announce her passing on after a brave battle with cancer.”

“Our sincere gratitude goes to Kenya Pipeline Company for walking the journey with us. Special thank you to all our friends, the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF), the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK), and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).” Kimani added that more information would be supplied later.

“I am very saddened to share the loss of another cherished friend,” musician Daddy Owen said.
“Wanja, rest in peace. You will always be regarded as a remarkable and colourful volleyball player, leaving a lasting impact that is evident in Kenyan sports history.”

“Your name will live on in the history of Kenya’s athletic triumphs forever. I send my deepest sympathies to your family and friends, particularly to your brother Kimani. Wanja, you can relax. You were truly one of a kind.”

Wanja’s death happened merely days after former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama travelled to the family to cheer the ailing volleyball star, flanked by his brother and FKF Vice President McDonald Mariga, former national team coach Francis Kimanzi, and dozens of his erstwhile compatriots.

The former Harambee Stars captain wished Wanja a speedy recovery, saying, “We are all praying for her and wishing her a quick recovery.”
